1) What is Intelligent Gamer?

Intelligent Gamer is a community of gamers who play all genres and forms of games with one thing in common that ties us all together - intelligent discussion of games.

  • We are another branch of the gamer demographic.
  • We aim for a higher level of thinking.
  • We aim to raise the standards of the gaming press.
  • We believe that games are not just for kids and that adult gamers are not necessarily being immature and refusing to "grow up".
  • We believe that the largely negative picture that the media uses to paint games and gamers is a stereotype that needs to be shattered.
  • We believe that there is no reason that games cannot be discussed with the same level of detail and criticism as any other form of media.
  • We have tastes that are more discerning than what the typical game marketing department might believe.
  • We engage in thoughtful, intellectual discussion of our favorite pasttime - games!

2) What are the site rules?

The rules that all Intelligent Gamer visitors are expected to abide by are posted on the Code of Conduct page.

3) So do you guys think you're better than other gamers?

The "intelligent" in our name was not designed in order to be haughty or elitist. However, we do believe that we are not your average gamer. We expect more from our games and from the gaming press. We are educated, thoughtful, and mature, and we simply want a place where we can discuss games without the childish behavior and flame wars that you may find so often these days in other gaming communities. So, if we had to describe what differentiates us from your average gamer in a single word, it would have to be "intelligent". "Mature Gamer" was another option that was perhaps more fitting, but it seemed to conjure up visions of a senior citizens' gaming community, so that idea was scrapped. :)

4) Is there an age/education requirement to join this community?

No. We simply expect all of our members to adhere to our Code of Conduct and basically behave as mature adults during their time here. We also wanted a community where it would not be out of place to discuss games in the same sentence as The Canterbury Tales, thermodynamics, or the Spanish-American War. This will inevitably result in skewing our demographic a bit older, but it is not to say that kids are unwelcome here. There are many kids who are wise and mature beyond their years. Basically, if you're not behaving childishly, you're welcome here!

5) Why does your site layout look messed up?

Older browsers are not able to render this site's design properly. We recommend using Mozilla Firefox over Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Either way, make sure you have the latest version of either browser. The site has been tested with Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0.

6) What kinds of games does this site cover?

Honestly, we run the gamut here. Pretty much anything that can be described as a "game" is welcome here. That includes computer games, console games, handheld games, mobile phone games, board games (like Monopoly), party games (like Scattergories), pen and paper role playing games (like Dungeons and Dragons), and more!

Really the only thing that might be a considered a game that we don't cover is any kind of sport. Discussion of sports will not be actively discouraged, but it is ultimately not the focus of this site.

7) Is it OK to be funny/make jokes here?

Yes! Even neurosurgeons and astrophysicists need a good laugh every now and then. As long as the jokes comply with our Code of Conduct, many of us would love to have a chuckle. Of course, that means some material such as racist jokes and toilet humor are definitely inappropriate here.
